It’s easy to think of Jeff Bezos only as the billionaire founder of Amazon. But like all of us, his character is shaped by the small moments and interactions that make up a life.
When Bezos was 10, he was on a family road trip with his grandparents, rolling around in the back seat and doing mental math to pass the time. He calculated that, based on his grandmother’s smoking habit, she had taken nine years off her life. When he told her this, expecting to be praised for his smarts, she started crying.
Bezos’ grandfather stopped the car, took him aside, and said something that would stay with him:
Jeff, one day you’ll understand that it’s harder to be kind than clever.
Those words stuck with Bezos. Bezos had used his intellect in a way that hurt someone he loved. His cleverness had trumped his compassion.
Throughout his life and career, he tried to remember the importance of kindness. He’s not perfect; like all of us, he’s had moments where he could have been kinder. But that childhood moment with his grandparents seems to have instilled in him a recognition of the value of kindness.
We’ve all been there—times when we said something clever but unkind or stayed quiet when we could have said something kind. Bezos’ story reminds us that these small moments matter. They shape who we become.
It’s easy to get caught up in being clever and outsmarting others in business and life. But as Bezos learned, kindness is a choice. And often, it’s the harder but more important choice. His grandfather’s lesson is one we could all benefit from remembering.
