As a lawyer, Gandhi experienced firsthand the injustices faced by Indians living under apartheid in South Africa. His awakening came when he was forcibly removed from a train compartment reserved for whites. Upon returning to India, Gandhi became the spiritual leader of the Indian National Congress. His philosophy centered around satyagraha, a term he coined to describe nonviolent resistance.
