Put a band on it

Put an elastic band on your phone - Focus hack

We’ve all been there – settling in to focus on an important task when suddenly our phone lights up with a notification. Before we know it, we’re sucked into a vortex of emails, social media posts, and cat videos, with our original intention a distant memory. While undeniably useful, our smartphones have an uncanny ability to monopolize our attention at the most inopportune moments.

A simple trick to keep your phone from hijacking your focus

I’ve tried all the usual advice: putting my phone in a drawer, activating airplane mode, and even using my son’s smiling face as my lock screen background in an attempt to guilt myself into staying on task. But let’s be real – with a device as enticing as a pocket-sized supercomputer, a drawer is too easily opened and airplane mode too readily switched off. And while I adore my child, his adorable grin is no match for the siren song of mindless scrolling.

All the distracted ladies (and men) out there.
Put a band on it!

Enter the elastic band trick! This brilliantly low-tech solution involves wrapping an ordinary rubber band around your phone. It sounds almost too simple to be effective, but hear me out.

Phone with elastic band

The genius of the elastic band lies in its ability to serve as a tactile reminder of your intention to limit phone use. Every time you reach for your device, you’ll encounter the physical resistance of the band. This split-second obstacle is often just enough to snap you out of autopilot mode and make you pause to consider whether you really need to check your phone at that moment.

Over time, the simple act of removing and replacing the elastic band can become a mindfulness ritual of sorts. As you take off the band to use your phone, you signal to yourself that you’re consciously choosing to engage with the device. When you’re ready to refocus on your primary task, you replace the band, physically and psychologically delineating the end of your phone break.

It’s worth noting that this technique isn’t about demonizing our phones or striving for some unrealistic ideal of constant productivity. Rather, it’s a flexible, forgiving tool to help us be more intentional with our time and attention. It’s a way of saying, “I’m here when you truly need me, but remember what else matters to you.”

Personally, I’ve found this humble hack to be a game-changer. My phone still beckons, but more often than not, the slight resistance of the elastic band is enough to make me think twice.
