In eighth grade, Mrs. Dooley taught us the “Big Rock” theory of time management: If you’re trying to fit rocks, pebbles, and sand into a jar, you’ve got to put the big rocks in first. Once those are in place, the smaller bits will all fall into place around them.

It made sense in theory, but applying it to my life was harder. I’d stare down my list of chores, extracurriculars and science projects with growing dread, wishing for a magic wand to sort out my competing priorities. Little did I know, the 2+8 prioritizing technique was the hack I needed all along—a fail-proof method for putting those big rocks front and centre and keeping the sand from swallowing me whole.

The 2+8 prioritizing technique gives you the clarity you need in the midst of chaos. It just might change the way you work forever and become your new secret weapon for getting the right things done.

What is the 2+8 prioritizing technique?

The 2+8 method has you choose two primary tasks that are your top priorities for the day. These are the “must-dos” that will have the biggest positive impact on your goals.

Next, select up to eight secondary tasks that are still important but are more flexible. Aim to get these done after your top two.

Resist the temptation to have more than ten tasks in total. Overloading your list will cause stress and disappointment. Keep it focused.

Separating a couple of critical tasks from the rest of your list provides much-needed focus. You cut through the noise and zero in on what matters most.

Having just two top priorities makes them feel achievable, even on hectic days. You avoid feeling paralyzed by a sprawling, disorganized list.

How to get started

  • Spend 10 minutes each evening choosing your 2+8 for the next day. Make it a habit.
  • For your top two, ask: “What will move the needle most on my key goals and projects?” Think impact, not urgency.
  • Be realistic with your eight secondary tasks. Don’t set yourself up for frustration.
  • Follow your list, but assess and adapt as needed. Stay agile.
  • If something important comes up, swap it for one of your eight. Don’t just keep adding on.
  • Experiment to find a planning tool that works for you, like a notepad or app. Keep it simple.
