Spindle Density

Spindle density refers to the number of “spindles” that occur during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in the brain. Spindles are brief bursts of brain activity that occur during stage 2 of NREM sleep.

Research suggests that spindle density is related to a variety of cognitive functions, including memory consolidation, learning, and attention. Higher spindle density has been associated with better cognitive performance in these areas. In addition, spindle density is thought to play a role in restoring and maintaining brain function during sleep.

Measuring spindle density typically involves using electroencephalography (EEG) to record brain activity during sleep and analyzing spindles’ frequency, duration, and amplitude.

Studies have shown that spindle density can be influenced by factors such as age, sex, and sleep quality and that certain sleep disorders, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, can reduce spindle density.
