It’s easy to think of Jeff Bezos only as the billionaire founder of Amazon. But like all of us, his character is shaped by the small moments and interactions that make up a life.
When Bezos was 10, he was on a family road trip with his grandparents, rolling around in the back seat and doing mental math to pass the time. He calculated that, based on his grandmother’s smoking habit, she had taken nine years off her life. When he told her this, expecting to be praised for his smarts, she started crying.
Bezos’ grandfather stopped the car, took him aside, and said something that would stay with him:
Jeff, one day you’ll understand that it’s harder to be kind than clever.
