The quest method for achieving your goals

The quest method for achieving your inner goals

Doing quests, not goals

Do you have big ambitions you want to accomplish but find yourself stalling or waiting for the “right time”? Stop setting goals and start doing quests!

What’s wrong with goals?

When we talk about goals, a few issues instantly arise that make them harder to achieve.

  1. Goals feel like things you’ll get to later when life is less hectic. You’ll learn guitar or start that side business soon, but not quite yet.
  2. The word “goal” has become uninspiring. It conjures up images of tedious work targets and soulless KPIs. It’s hardly the stuff of legend.
  3. We tend to expect goal-striving to happen in some mythical stretch of wide-open time rather than alongside our busy day-to-day lives.

But the truth is, accomplishing meaningful things is how life becomes more expansive and rewarding. Building skills, gaining experiences, and organizing your world are the paths to an extraordinary existence. And it has to happen now, concurrent with your regular responsibilities, or it won’t happen at all.

Embarking on your quest

A quest is like a goal but so much more thrilling. When you quest:

  • You expect a true adventure. There will be unexpected hurdles, surprising turns, and moments of doubt. All part of the ride.
  • You anticipate inner transformation. In vanquishing challenges, you become someone new – a person capable of greater feats.
  • You ready yourself to confront dragons. These beasts symbolize your own self-limiting beliefs. Things you thought you could never do. In facing them, you win the treasure they guard and become a larger version of yourself.
  • You know your victory could change the world. Every quest is built on overcoming internal barriers. In doing so, you expand what’s possible for humanity itself.

Choosing your quest

So, what does a real-life quest look like? It could involve finally decluttering your entire home, recording your first album, writing the initial chapter of your novel, preparing six months of lessons for your students, or setting up your dream workshop.

Some more examples of heroic quests

  • Write and self-publish a children’s book
  • Train for and complete a marathon
  • Learn to cook 10 new international cuisines
  • Volunteer 100 hours at a local animal shelter
  • Master the art of public speaking by giving a speech
  • Renovate a room in your home from start to finish
  • Organize a community fundraiser for a cause you care about
  • Develop a daily meditation practice and stick with it for 60 days
  • Learn to play 10 of your favourite songs on an instrument
  • Create a photo essay documenting your hometown
  • Build a piece of furniture from scratch
  • Trace your family tree back five generations

The key is framing it as an exciting, growth-sparking adventure. One that will require you to vanquish inner limitations and level up as a human. It is not just a box to check but a mission to transform yourself through.

Slaying your dragons

Every quest has its defining ordeal – the dragon you must overcome to seize your reward. This usually takes the form of an inner block or fear that’s stopped you before.

Maybe it’s a tough conversation you need to have. A daunting skill you must learn. A big creative risk you’ve been avoiding. This is the moment of truth in your heroic journey.

Returning victorious

With your dragon slain, you return transformed. You’re not just someone who did a cool thing – you’re a person who knows they can overcome staggering odds. A person who can venture into the unknown, best fearsome monsters, and return with the prize.

That shift in identity and capability? That’s the real treasure. Because it means you can do it again, with greater adventures and mightier dragons. You’ve become unstoppable in your questing.

So dream up your own legendary mission. Name your dragons and ready your sword. A heroic transformation awaits if you dare to pursue it. The only question is: what will you quest?
