How the WOOP method works

  1. Wish
    Identify a specific, meaningful goal that you want to achieve. It could be improving a skill, reaching a professional milestone, or making a personal change. Write your wish in 3-4 words for clarity.
  2. Outcome
    Vividly imagine the positive outcomes and benefits of achieving your goal. How will it make you feel? What will it enable you to do? Visualizing success activates the brain’s motivation centres.
  3. Obstacle
    Here’s where WOOP sets itself apart. Instead of just focusing on the positives, identify the internal obstacles that could hold you back. These could be psychological barriers, bad habits, or self-limiting beliefs.
  4. Plan
    Create a concrete “if-then” plan to overcome your obstacles. What specific actions will you take when challenges arise? Having a clear roadmap keeps you on track.

Studies show that WOOP can nearly triple the time spent on goal-related tasks, double physical activity levels, and significantly reduce stress and improve quality of life.

Tips

The order of steps in WOOP is important! Identify your wish and outcome before the obstacle. This order is essential for creating the desired effects.

Make your plan as actionable and detailed as possible. Format your plan as: “If (obstacle) then I will think (helpful thought) and do (helpful action)”.

You can combine WOOP with other productivity techniques like time blocking, the Pomodoro technique, and progress tracking.
