Listening is the most important communication skill, and yet the most neglected. We all think we’re good listeners, but we’re not. We’re too busy, distracted, self-absorbed, or bored to pay attention to what others are saying. And that’s a big problem because listening is the key to connecting with other people.
Ralph G. Nichols famously said, “The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.”
When someone opens up to us, our first instinct is often to offer advice or solutions to their problems. However, this may not always be the best approach. Instead, simply saying “Tell me more” can be a powerful way to show that you care and are willing to listen.

By offering your time and energy to listen, you allow the person to process their thoughts and feelings while deepening your relationship. So next time someone opens up to you, try saying, “Tell me more,” and see where the conversation takes you. You might be surprised at how much closer it brings you together.
