The parable about the boy and the horse

The boy and the horse parable

The office was busy, and the young apprentice, Liam, was lost. His mind raced with uncertainties, and anxiety gnawed at his heart. As he struggled to focus on his work, his boss, Sophia, noticed his distress.

Sophia approached Liam with a gentle smile. “Liam, what troubles you?” she asked.

Liam sighed, his shoulders slumped. “I don’t know how I’ll ever get my work done. There’s so much to do, and I feel lost.”

Sophia nodded, understanding his plight. She touched his shoulder and said, “Let me tell you a story.”

Liam looked up, curiosity in his eyes.

“Once, a boy and a horse were lost in the woods,” Sophia began. “The boy said to the horse, ‘I can’t see my way forward.’ The horse replied, ‘Can you see your next step?’ The boy answered, ‘Yes.’ The horse then said, ‘Then take that step.'”

Liam listened intently, wondering how this story related to his situation.

Sophia continued, “Whenever anxiety takes hold, ask yourself, ‘Can I see my next step?’ More often than not, the answer will be ‘Yes.’ Focus on that single step, and take it.”

Liam pondered her words, realizing the wisdom they held.

“Remember, Liam,” Sophia said, “every step forward, no matter how small or imperfect, brings you closer to your goals. Embrace the messiness of growth, and don’t wait for perfection to start your journey. The magic happens when you take action, not while waiting on the sidelines.”

Liam felt a weight lift from his shoulders. He looked at Sophia with gratitude. “Thank you,” he said. “I needed to hear that.”

Sophia smiled warmly. “Remember the boy and the horse whenever you feel lost or anxious. Focus on your next step, and trust it will lead you in the right direction.”

From that day forward, Liam carried Sophia’s lesson with him. Whenever anxiety crept in, he asked himself, “Can I see my next step?” And with each step he took, he grew more confident, knowing that he was moving closer to his goals, one step at a time.

Remember the boy and the horse when you’re lost and afraid. Ask yourself if you can see the next step. If you can, take it. Don’t wait for perfection. Embrace the mess of growth. The magic happens when you act, not when you wait. Take that step, and trust it will lead you where you want to be.
