Historien om søstjernen

Historien om søstjerner - At smide søstjerner i havet.

An old man walked along the beach and noticed a young boy. The boy was picking up starfish stranded by the receding tide and tossing them back into the sea.

Den gamle mand spurgte nysgerrigt, hvad drengen lavede.

“If the starfish are still on the beach when the sun gets high, they’ll die,” the boy replied, gently throwing another one into the waves.

The old man shook his head. “But the beach goes on for miles, and there are so many starfish. You can’t possibly make a real difference.”

The boy paused, considering the man’s words. Then he picked up another starfish and held it out.

“It makes all the difference to this one,” he said, and gently tossed the starfish into the welcoming sea.

The story’s central conflict between the old man’s cynicism and the boy’s determination embodies a fundamental philosophical tension. It invites us to grapple with how to find meaning and purpose in a world that often seems indifferent to suffering. The boy’s actions offer a compelling answer.

Only by following our deepest values can we maintain our humanity in the face of life’s harsh realities.

Our actions also have the power to influence and inspire others. Resist succumbing to despair or apathy in the face of overwhelming tasks. Focus on the small steps you can do for good in any given moment. Only by consistently acting with empathy and conviction can we spark meaningful change – one starfish at a time.

Praktiske råd

Start i det små og start nu

The sheer scale of your work projects and world problems can feel paralyzing, leading to inaction. Counter this by identifying concrete, manageable ways to make a positive difference in your daily life and community. Whether it’s volunteering for a good cause, starting a new habit, doing the tiny first task on your big project, or simply extending kindness to a neighbour in need, every act matters. The key is to start where you are, with what you have.

Dyrk en urokkelig overbevisning

It’s easy to lose heart and give up. Hold fast to your deepest values, even when progress feels frustratingly slow. Build your own reservoir of inner resilience by regularly reflecting on your core principles. Let them serve as your north star, guiding and sustaining you through life’s trials.

  • The Helper’s High: Studies have shown that engaging in acts of kindness activates the mesolimbic reward system in the brain, leading to feelings of pleasure and well-being. This may help explain the boy’s sense of satisfaction from his selfless actions and why the old man is drawn to join in.
  • Sommerfugleeffekten: This principle holds that even minute changes in a system’s initial conditions can lead to vastly different outcomes over time. Seemingly small actions in the present moment can shape destinies beyond our imagination. Every choice matters.
