There is no way to happiness

There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.

Thich Nhat Hanh

Über den Autor

Thich Nhat Hanh, born Nguyễn Xuân Bảo on October 11, 1926, in Huế, Vietnam, was a Vietnamese Thiền Buddhist monk, poet, peace activist, and writer. His teachings focused on mindfulness, compassion, and inner change. At 16, Thich Nhat Hanh joined Tu Hieu Temple in Hue city as a novice monk. He worked to update Vietnamese Buddhism and was one of the first monks to study non-religious subjects at university. When war came to Vietnam, Thich Nhat Hanh had to choose between staying secluded or helping those hurt by the war. He chose to do both, creating “Engaged Buddhism,” a term he coined in his book Vietnam: Lotus in a Sea of Fire. His life’s work became helping people transform themselves to help society.

Forced out of Vietnam for nearly 40 years, Thich Nhat Hanh introduced Buddhism and mindfulness to the West. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. suggested him for the Nobel Peace Prize, calling him an “Apostle of peace and nonviolence.” His teachings connect with people across cultures and ages. Thich Nhat Hanh started the Plum Village Tradition, which has become a model for engaged Buddhism in the 21st century. His gentle personality and deep wisdom continue to motivate millions around the world.

The Meaning of the quote

We often see happiness as a faraway goal, something we hope to get to. We think, “When I get this, I’ll be happy.” But Thich Nhat Hanh kindly tells us that happiness isn’t a distant place; it’s the path we’re on. It’s not about getting to a certain point; it’s about how we live life’s journey.

True happiness is being fully in the moment, taking in each moment with awareness. When we enjoy our morning coffee’s taste, feel the sun’s heat on our skin, or really listen to a friend’s laughter, we find happiness. It’s not in tomorrow’s successes but in today’s awareness. Happiness isn’t something we hope to get someday. It’s a choice we make with every breath. By growing gratitude, compassion, and love, we make our own happiness. It’s not waiting for us—it’s here, now.
